Top 10 Ways To Build A Better Log Home
These are the top 10 items to consider when building a log structure to ensure that you are getting the best system and lowest maintenance issues.
- Increase the size of the overhangs to keep the water away and protect it from the suns rays. Minimum of 24" overhang.
- Build the home at least 18" above the ground. This eliminates splash back from the eaves on to the house.
- Blast the exterior of the house with sand, crushed glass or corncob to open the pores of the wood so that the stain and preservatives can absorb deeper to penetrate into the wood.
- Carefully select the logs and wood species so that a minimal amount of checks are exposed to water.
- Logs that have cadmium (growth) layer removed and are peeled to ensure solid heartwood is exposed to the weather.
- The correct application of the stains and preservatives. Preferred a stain & preservative that will absorb into the wood and allow moisture to evaporate from the log.
