Log Homes

Log homes can be built using round logs or logs that have been squared (hewn) on our portable band-saw mill. Depending on your preference, these squared logs can be left rough sawn, as it comes off the saw mill, sanded for a smoother finish or hand planned for a lightly textured, planned finish. The thicker the log wall, the more insulation you'll have so we choose not to build with less than 8" thick timbers.

When using round logs the bark is peeled by hand, leaving a draw knife finish. Again, when choosing our round logs, we like the tapered end no smaller than 8". When using new logs we like to cut the corners with full dove tail notches, tag each log and assemble the structure at our shop to let stand, season and settle for about a year. New logs have the tendency to shrink if not given a chance to dry. This settling can cause major problems if not accounted for in the building of interior walls, cabinetry and the functioning of doors and windows. Our advice- if you're choosing to build with new logs, plan at least a full year of drying time.

Most of the custom log homes we've built have had lofts. In order to get more head room upstairs, we generally continue with a few courses of logs above the 2nd floor. This forms what's called a knee wall. This will allow for additional usable square footage upstairs.

Usually our hand crafted log homes have a roof system comprised of heavy timber trusses, spaced 8' to 10' apart. The under side of the roof is exposed showing all of the heavy timber work and a ceiling made of tongue and groove boards or drywall, depending on your preference. Every job is custom designed so there are endless possibilities.
